Sabbaday Falls, NH — One of the most accessible waterfall stops in the White Mountains, right off the Kancamagus Highway. A short, easy walk leads to a narrow flume with a powerful cascade. In late April the flow is at its absolute best.

Arethusa Falls, NH — The tallest waterfall in New Hampshire. Always impressive, but in spring it’s genuinely thunderous. The 2.8-mile hike in is easy enough that the payoff feels almost unfair.

Step Falls, Maine — Less well-known than the NH falls, which makes it a gem. A series of cascades and pools spread across open ledge — more of an experience than a single viewpoint, and a great early-season destination before Maine gets busy.

A Few Tips for Spring Waterfall Season

Water levels make trails slippery and stream crossings unpredictable: wear real shoes, check trail conditions on AllTrails before you go, and don’t underestimate the cold. A wet April day in the White Mountains is a different beast than a July afternoon.

Just a full tank of gas, a good playlist, and a stretch of New England road that has no right being as beautiful as it is. May is honestly the best time for this: the crowds haven’t shown up yet, the trees are that impossible fresh green, and you can actually pull over whenever you want without fighting for a parking spot.

Here are my three favorite drives to do right now, plus where to eat along the way.

THE DRIVES

🛣️ The Kancamagus Highway, NH Kancamagus Highway winds through the heart of the White Mountain National Forest: 34 spectacular miles between Lincoln and Conway. Waterfalls. Covered bridges. Mountains on every side. Zero traffic in May. Stop at Sabbaday Falls, grab a coffee in North Conway, and take your time.

Heads up: no gas stations on the route, and cell service disappears. Fill up before you go.

🛣️ Coastal Maine : Route 1 Mid-May on the Maine coast is one of the best-kept secrets in New England, the weather is lovely, there are plenty of sunny days, and the trip costs a fraction of what it would in summer. Take Route 1 slow. Stop in Kennebunkport, grab lobster in Rockland, and let the rocky coast do its thing.

🛣️ The Mohawk Trail, MA Starting in Lanesborough and stretching 26 miles up to Mt. Greylock, the highest point in Massachusetts, this was the first scenic road in New England, officially opening in 1914. It winds through the Berkshires past farm stands, old sugar houses, and tiny towns. Go slow.

WHERE TO EAT ON THE ROAD

A road trip in New England is only as good as where you stop to eat. Don’t Miss:

🍽️ Red’s Eats, Wiscasset ME — a tiny roadside stand in coastal Maine that draws lines down the street for its lobster rolls piled impossibly high. Worth every minute of the wait.

If you’re driving the Kanc or heading up to Acadia, note that Cadillac Mountain now requires a reservation between May 20 and October 25 tickets drop on Recreation.gov two days in advance at 10 AM and sell out in seconds.

Tubing on the Saco River

Whether you're traveling with kids, friends, or just looking for a peaceful solo float, the Saco River has something for everyone—from gentle 1-mile floats to slightly more adventurous 3-mile routes with small rapids. Here’s everything you need to plan your trip.

What to Expect
Most Saco River tubing trips are self-guided and last between 1 to 4 hours depending on the route you choose, how fast the river is flowing, and how often you stop. Tubing routes range from flat-water floats to more exciting stretches like the Redstone Rapids (best for adults or older kids).

Most companies provide tubes, kayaks, or canoes and offer shuttle services either to or from the launch site. Some allow you to bring your own gear, but be warned: cheap tubes may not survive the river rocks.

Expect plenty of sandy beaches and river bends perfect for picnicking or just relaxing with your feet in the water.

Where to Go & How to Get There

The Upper Saco River flows south through North Conway, making it easily accessible by car from cities across New England.

• Boston to North Conway: 2 hrs 45 mins

• Portland to North Conway: 1 hr 40 mins

• Burlington to North Conway: 3 hrs

There are numerous launch and takeout points along the river. Many rental companies have detailed maps showing access points, river flow, and shuttle stops.

Top Outfitters
Some popular tube rental companies include:

• Saco Bound (highly recommended for customer service and convenience)

• Saco River Tubing Center

• Saco Canoe Rentals

Most companies offer bottomed and bottomless tubes, kayaks, and even special “cooler tubes” so you can float your drinks and snacks along with you.

What to Bring
Here’s a quick checklist for a smooth day on the river:

Essentials:

• Swimsuit

• Water & snacks

• Waterproof phone pouch

• Hat and sunscreen

• Sunglasses with a strap

Optional but Handy:

• River shoes or sandals

• Dry bag

• Cooler with drinks (no glass!)

• Ball or frisbee

• Extra towel and warm layer (especially early or late in the season)

Cooler tubes are available to rent and make a great upgrade for group floats.

Our Experience
We floated the Saco on a warm July Friday, renting from Saco Bound for a 3-mile float. The recent rains meant the water was higher and faster than usual, making for a fun ride. The float took just under 2.5 hours with a few breaks on sandy beaches. At the end, we waited about 15 minutes for the shuttle and were back at our car in no time. It was easy, relaxing, and a blast for both adults and kids.

Know Before You Go

• You can bring dogs, but some opt to leave them home to avoid popped tubes.

• Shoes are optional but helpful when walking to/from the river.

• Water temps vary: chilly early in the season, refreshing by July.

• The Saco is generally shallow and clean, ideal for families.

Plum Island is accessible only by a short bridge, and once you cross, you’ll find a mix of neighborhoods, shops, and beaches on the northern end. The southern stretch of the island is protected as the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, while the very tip is home to Sandy Point State Reservation. Both areas require a small entry fee but reward visitors with unspoiled landscapes and wide-open spaces.

Miles of Sandy Beaches
The island’s biggest draw is its coastline—miles of sandy beach along the Atlantic. You can access the shore in several spots, perfect for swimming in summer, strolling year-round, or simply taking in the ocean views.

Parker River National Wildlife Refuge
Covering more than 4,700 acres, this refuge is one of New England’s top destinations for birdwatching and coastal walks. Boardwalks and short trails lead through dunes, salt marshes, and maritime forests, offering peaceful views and plenty of chances to spot wildlife.

Birdwatching Paradise
With over 300 bird species recorded, Plum Island is famous among birders. Depending on the season, you might see everything from snowy owls to piping plovers. The island lies on a major migratory route, making spring and fall especially exciting times to visit.

Scenic Walks and Trails
Beyond the beaches, Plum Island has easy trails and overlooks. We especially enjoyed the Pine’s Trail loop and the boardwalk that leads out to sweeping views of the coast.

For a different perspective, head to the calmer waters of the Great Marsh. Kayaking or paddleboarding here is a great way to see herons, egrets, and sometimes even seals.

Nearby Newburyport
Just over the bridge, the historic seaport of Newburyport offers shops, seafood restaurants, and plenty of small-town charm. It’s the perfect stop before or after your island visit.

Take a Ride on the East Coast Greenway

The East Coast Greenways is a trail system that is in development from Maine to Florida and part of it runs right through Southern Maine. In Kennebunk and the surrounding area, this greenway is part of the Eastern Trail that runs on old rainway tracks. From Kennebunk, you can bike north through Biddeford, Saco, and Scarborough Marsh, one of the most beautiful and bird-rich stretches on the entire East Coast route.

This leads to the Scarborough Marsh Trail and the South Portland Greenbelt Walkway, which provides protected access right into Portland, Maine’s largest city. This is a great way to explore this part of Maine by bike.

If you have two cars, you can spot a car otherwise, bike this as an out and back. We biked from Biddeford to Kennebunk and then on the roads to Kennebunkport. The best part of this route is taking the bridge over the highway!

Looking for a big view without an all-day commitment? The 2.2-mile loop to Table Rock in Grafton Notch State Park climbs steeply through boulders and forest to one of Maine’s most dramatic ledges—with sweeping views of Old Speck and the surrounding mountains.

We hiked this one as a family on a summer camping trip and it had a little bit of everything: a fun scramble, ridge views, and even a hidden boulder cave. Whether you're chasing fall colors or planning a summer swim after your hike, this is one of my favorite short trails in New England.

The Perkins Cove Footbridge: A Little Bridge with a Lot of Charm

One of my favorite little details in Perkins Cove is the white wooden footbridge that spans the harbor. It is more than just a way to get from one side to the other — it is a piece of history, and a big part of what makes the cove feel so special.

Built in the early 1900s, this manually operated drawbridge connects the walking paths and shops on either side of the harbor. On busy summer days, you might even see someone crank it open to let a lobster boat pass through. It is the only surviving hand-cranked drawbridge of its kind in the United States.

From the middle of the bridge, you get some of the best views in the cove: boats rocking gently in the water, fishing gear stacked neatly on the docks, and the wide Atlantic just beyond. I always stop here, even if just for a moment.

The footbridge is open to pedestrians year-round and connects easily to the Marginal Way walking path. Whether you are visiting for lunch, shopping, or just a stroll by the water, make sure to cross it at least once — it is part of what makes Perkins Cove feel timeless.

If you're visiting Perkins Cove, one of the best things you can do is get out on the water. The boat tours that leave right from the dock offer a whole new way to experience the coast — peaceful, salty, and full of views you just can't get from shore.
