Peak Waterfall Season Is Here

The spring is the best time of year for waterfalls in New England. Snowmelt from the mountains combines with spring rain to send water rushing over every ledge, cascade, and drop in the region.

Here are a few worth putting on your radar:

Sabbaday Falls, NH — One of the most accessible waterfall stops in the White Mountains, right off the Kancamagus Highway. A short, easy walk leads to a narrow flume with a powerful cascade. In late April the flow is at its absolute best.

Arethusa Falls, NH — The tallest waterfall in New Hampshire. Always impressive, but in spring it’s genuinely thunderous. The 2.8-mile hike in is easy enough that the payoff feels almost unfair.

Step Falls, Maine — Less well-known than the NH falls, which makes it a gem. A series of cascades and pools spread across open ledge — more of an experience than a single viewpoint, and a great early-season destination before Maine gets busy.

A Few Tips for Spring Waterfall Season

Water levels make trails slippery and stream crossings unpredictable: wear real shoes, check trail conditions on AllTrails before you go, and don’t underestimate the cold. A wet April day in the White Mountains is a different beast than a July afternoon.

The window is short. Pick one and go.
